“Happiness is a byproduct of a well-ordered life,” declares the wealthy and determined Bertha Russell (The White Lotus' Carrie Coon) in the first official teaser for season three of HBO’s The Gilded Age.
After winning the so-called “Opera War” in season two, Bertha is prepared to take her place at the top of New York society. But even that is not enough for the ambitious Bertha, and she has her eyes set on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable social heights. Meanwhile, her husband, the railroad magnate George Russell (Morgan Spector), is risking everything on a gambit that could revolutionize the railroad industry.
Across the street, the old-money Brook household is topsy-turvy after Agnes van Rhijn’s’ (Christine Baranski) son, Oscar (Blake Ritson) lost everything on a bad investment and Aunt Ada (Cynthia Nixon) saved the day after her marriage to the secretly monied (and now deceased) clergyman Luke Forte (Robert Sean Leonard). Meanwhile, Agnes and Ada’s orphaned and unmarried niece, Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), and young Larry Russell (Harry Richardson) seem to be falling in love. A marriage between them would advance Louisa’s fortunes considerably, again upending everyone’s roles to make her the family's wealthiest woman.
Finally, Peggy (Denée Benton) is courted by a handsome doctor from Newport whose family does not approve of her career as a journalist. And everyone is dealing with the ramifications of the fast-approaching future and how the oncoming change will affect their own places in society.
