Set against the bright lights of Los Angeles, Apple TV’s Imperfect Women draws viewers into a web of intimacy, rivalry and betrayal among three longtime friends played by Kerry Washington, Kate Mara and Elisabeth Moss. Like so many in the luxury class, the three friends’ lives appear immaculate but beneath the perfect surface, desire, regret and buried tensions threaten to destroy it all.

Imperfect Women goes into the way these women’s lives intertwine, almost like a single organism,” said Karin Fong, creative director at Imaginary Forces, in a statement. “The title itself begs the question, what do we show on the surface and what do we keep hidden? Do we all have secrets? Especially this trio of friends who are hiding things from each other.”

Drawing inspiration from kintsugi – the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold – veins of gold flow through each fracture, binding the fragments together while illuminating the beauty of the imperfection. The result is a rich and atmospheric sequence that mirrors the show’s central tension between appearance and reality.

“They have all their own lies that they tell themselves and each other,” Fong adds. “The showrunners were very clear that this is a very sexy show. It’s about lust and infidelity. It’s not exactly a love story, although in a way it is, because it’s really about the love and dedication between these three women.”

Imaginary Forces collaborated closely with the creative team behind Imperfect Women, including executive producer and star Washington, to develop a sequence that captures the show’s tones of sensuality, suspense and emotional complexity.

Besides Washington, Moss also executive produces. Lesli Linka Glatter serves as executive producer and showrunner along with EPs Annie Weisman and Pilar Savone. Joel Kinnaman and Corey Stoll also star.

Imperfect Women is now streaming on Apple TV.
