Los Angeles-based creative studio yU+co captures the sun, sand and surf feeling of Apple TV Plus’ new crime comedy, Bad Monkey, starring Vince Vaughn as chatty former (not by choice) homicide detective Andrew Yancy. The series is based on Carl Hiaasen’s best-selling novel of the same title.
“In the sequence, we wanted to convey the unique Floridian setting and the fun, tongue-in-cheek tone of the mystery,” yU+co said in an email.

Yancy is an exiled Miami detective, who began working the beat in the Keys, only to get fired there as well after dumping his ex-girlfriend, Bonnie’s (Michelle Monaghan) boyfriend in the drink by hitting the man’s golf cart with his car. Yancy is beginning a new role as a restaurant inspector when he gets involved with a mystery that starts with a severed arm being hooked and brought on a boat during a fishing excursion. The story gets twistier and more complicated from there, but always retains its sense of fun and blue-sky freshness.
“We brought Yancy's world to life on a beach, crafting elements from sand to symbolize the unfolding mystery. As the sand disintegrates and Yancy's world collapses into dust, a red light envelops the scene, symbolizing his plunge into the shadowy world of crime,” yU+co said.
Besides Vaughan and Monaghan, Bad Monkey also stars L. Scott Caldwell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat and Ronald Peet. Also appearing are Charlotte Lawrence, John Ortiz, Tom Nowicki, Zach Braff and Scott Glenn.
It’s executive produced by Bill Lawrence, Matt Tarses, Jeff Ingold, Marcus Siega, Liza Katzer and Vaughn. The series comes from Warner Bros. Television in partnership with Lawrence’s Doozer Productions, which has an overall deal at Warner Bros.
Bad Monkey premiered Wednesday, August 14 on Apple TV Plus. The limited series’ finale will stream Wednesday, October 9.
