Given the opportunity to voice their feedback, fans of sports videogame EA Sports FC 26 have no shortage of suggestions.
“Make it more realistic,” one fan begs, while the next offers up “hardcore.” All of the suggestions go directly to EA’s developers, who promptly try to incorporate them into the game.
Then along comes former Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović, who says “tae kwon do should be allowed.” The developers try that one out and things get crazier from there.
“Consequences should be bigger,” results in a pile of pianos falling on that proposer's head.
“We should get points for style,” suggests Liverpool team captain Virgil van Dijk, who appears in the film a few times.
“Rebounds should be more random” causes soccer balls to bounce off everything from hair dryers to goal posts.
When one Scottish fan says “the FC soundtrack should be more emotional,” everyone listening to a synth version of “Take My Breath Away” starts sobbing.
Getting back to the action, Jude Bellingham says “it should be more dramatic,” and then sees lightning strike his ball as he’s dribbling. An American fan suggests “more showbiz … you know, sports” and so a marching band and a monster truck show up on the field as an overwhelmed developer puts his head in his hands. American soccer star Alyssa Thompson just shakes her head while playing from her couch.
Also making cameos in the spot are Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, F1’s Lewis Hamilton (begging for cars, of course) and former German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn (with a little help from VFX).
Finally, all hell breaks loose when one person suggests using video-assisted referee (VAR) and another says “get rid of VAR!”
All of the chaos is set to a driving soundtrack.
“FC 26 is a celebration of our community. This year we listened deeply, challenged the status quo and backed up our words with action,” said Charlie Villiers, senior director, marketing, EA Sports FC, in a statement. “The Club Is Yours created in partnership with Uncommon allowed us to capture the power of the community and create a platform that connects our fans, their creativity and the energy that fuels this game. The result has been a campaign which showcases the power of our players and introduces an exciting new chapter of EA Sports FC.”
The short film was produced for EA Sports FC by Uncommon Creative Studio and directed by Gary Freedman for MJZ. Framestore handled post-production with editing by Work Editors and sound by Sam Ashwell at 750.
“More than just a trailer, this film is a tribute to football culture — spanning the artistry of global icons, the dreams of the next generation and the roar of the stadium,” said Nils Leonard, co-founder, Uncommon, also in a statement. “We’re so proud of our long-standing partnership with EA Sports FC, and launching this new game — shaped by player feedback and the community — feels like an exciting next chapter that’s never been seen before.”
