Game publisher Wizards of the Coast collaborated with creative studio Imaginary Forces on the launch campaign for trading-card game Magic: The Gathering x Marvel’s Spider-Man, a crossover deck celebrating one of Marvel’s most popular heroes.
Led by Imaginary Forces Creative Director Tosh Kodama, the team carried the project from ideation through execution. Kodama co-directed the live-action component with Co-Director/DP Shawn Kim.
“We crafted a live-action look that harmonizes nicely with the Spider-Man CG world we built in the studio. Shooting on Fox’s backlots, we turned that gorgeous Southern California skyline into a moody Brooklyn neighborhood—the perfect playground for our story,” said Kodama in a press release.
The campaign juxtaposes live-action sequences with animation, channeling the many visual styles and personalities of Spider-Man while honoring the long-running trading-card game. Anchoring the piece is The Ramones’ cover of the famous Spider-Man theme, infusing the work with punk-rock energy. The result is a launch film that honors the spirit of Spider-Man while amplifying the storytelling power of Magic: The Gathering.
Wizards of the Coast released its Magic: The Gathering x Spider-Man crossover deck on Friday, September 26.
